The piano teacher was able to discern an extraordinary singing talent in his student and took Khibla to the vocal class of Josephine Bumburidi.

A serious musical education, in which a brilliant vocal school is combined with the background of an instrumentalist, helps the singer to subtly understand and feel the musical text. She is always in an ensemble, be it piano, organ or orchestra. International competitions played a special role in Hibla Gerzmav’s career. The singer’s active international career begins in the first decade of the new century.
A real discovery for the American public was the performance of the role of Liu in Puccini’s opera “Turandot” on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where her performance was called a “sunny debut”, then Antonia in “The Tales of Hoffmann” and Desdemona in “Othello” were performed on this stage. ; his debut on the stage of the Paris Opera – Vittelius in La Clemenza di Titus was marked not only by rave reviews from critics, but also by a new invitation to play the role of Elisabeth of Valois in Verdi’s Don Carlos. Performances followed one after another in:
She performs on the world’s main stages: in London’s Covent Garden she makes her debut as Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, then performs Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Amalia Grimaldi in Verdi’s Simone Boccanegra.

Among the roles performed in 2022 are Norma in the new production of the Royal Opera of Madrid and Leonora in the Teatro Liceu, also in the new production of the play, where her performance was recognized as outstanding, and critics noted the extraordinary musicality and acting talent of the singer. And, of course, Hibla Gerzmava performs on the stages of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, where her repertoire includes Elizabeth of Valois in Don Carlos, Tosca in Puccini’s opera, Desdemona in Othello.
The singer’s active international career begins in the first decade of the new century.
Hibla’s chamber repertoire is as extensive as it is original; the inclusion of certain works is not accidental, be it the performance of Baroque music accompanied by an organ, romances by Glinka, composers of the pre-Glinka period, vocal cycles by Russian or Western composers.
Hibla’s career is not only about performing on major opera stages; work with chamber vocal music is no less important for her. It is no coincidence that the geography of her chamber concerts is as extensive as the geography of opera performances: the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Musikverein in Vienna. In October 2022, Hibla was invited to perform the soprano role in G. Verdi’s Requiem in Tokyo as part of the season opening and inauguration of Fabio Luisi as Chief Conductor of the NHK Orchestra.
And it is not surprising that in the first competition organized by Khibla, accompanists will perform on equal terms with the vocalists. For more than 30 years, the duet of Khibla Gerzmava and Ekaterina Ganelina has been an example of an ideal ensemble, perfect joint music-making.

Hibla is always interested in self-improvement and discovering new things, which is why her stage partners and collaboration with conductors and directors are so important to her. Her co-creation with Vladimir Spivakov played a huge role in her creative biography; she always remembers with gratitude her work on roles at the Musical Theater with maestro Wolf Gorelick and Felix Korobov, collaboration at the Mariinsky Theater and concert performances with Valery Gergiev; Khibla sang concert programs with Alexander Lazarev and Vladimir Fedoseev, her conductors in European and American theaters were Marco Armigliato, Fabio Luisi, Jiri Beloglavek, Antonio Pappano, Lorin Maazel, and her conductor and stage partner was Placido Domingo.
All directors collaborating with the singer are ready to invite her to their productions again and again, because working with Khibla is so interesting for them not only as a musician, but also as an actress. Alexander Titel, Andrei Konchalovsky, Krzysztof Warlikowski, and Andreas Homoki spoke about this
Hibla is a versatile person who is not afraid to take risks and loves experiments. Concert program with the jazz trio of pianist Daniil Kramer “Opera. Jazz. Blues” became one of the brightest events in the cultural life of Moscow.
In love with jazz, Khibla continues her creative search in this genre on the same stage with such interesting musicians as Denis Matsuev, Deborah Brown (USA), Sergey Makeev, Andrey Ivanov, Arkady Shilkloper, Dmitry Sevastyanov, Oleg Akkuratov. The outstanding musician Georgy Garanyan, whose life ended so suddenly in January 2010, was one of Hibla’s favorite partners in the world of jazz.
In the Abkhaz language, Hibla means “golden-eyed”. This is probably why her eyes always sparkle. But that precious gift with which she captivates millions of listeners is, of course, her golden voice
