Hibla’s news

1 May 2012, Tuesday
On May 13th, the 11th Music Festival Hibla Gerzmava invites... will kick off in Abkhazia. This year, Hibla brings to the Festival well-known jazz musicians: Andrei Ivanov (double bass), Dmitry Sevastyanov (percussion), Arkady Shilkloper (French and Alpine horn) and, of course, a pianist Denis Matsuev, a great friend of Hibla who comes to the Festival for the second time (he was there last year). The concert will feature a special appearance by Georgy Piliya. On May 16th, Hibla will give a recital accompanied by a pianist Ekaterina Ganelina, Hibla’s long-time music partner. The recital will feature works by Peter Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninov and a song cycle Madrigal by Nikolai Miaskovsky, as well as a few arias from operas by famous Western European composers performed by a soloist of the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre Arsen Sogomonyan (baritone). Both concerts, which will be held at the Abkhazia R. Gumba State Philharmonic Hall in Sukhum, will be narrated by a famous music critic Esma Dzheniya. The Festival runs within the framework of Russia-Abkhazia cultural seasons and supported by the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Ministry of Culture of Russia. For many years, and this year was no exception, the Festival was made possible thanks to continued support of Hibla’s close friends: Andrei Dudko and “New Generation” Charity Foundation, Enver Kuzmin and “Restavratsia N” Ltd.

30 March 2012, Friday
On April 2nd, one of the most luxurious hotels in the world — The Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), will host a unique event, in which Hibla will participate for the second time: a charity evening aimed to raise funds in support of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Fundraising Gala Beloved Friend, organised especially for this occasion, held within the framework of the Abu Dhabi Festival 2012, is dedicated to the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and a great admirer of his talent, patroness Nadezhda von Meck. Hibla will sing an aria by Tatiana (the famous «Letter scene») from Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin and the final scene from the opera, together with the baritone Vassily Ladyuk. Last year, Hibla participated in the Beloved Friend Gala at the Buckingham Palace, which was held in the presence of HRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker-Bowles and was warmly received by the Royal Family and their guests.

26 March 2012, Monday

Hibla will perform in the second half of the concert and will sing arias from operas by Handel, Puccini and Verdi, as well as Giuditta’s aria from an operetta by Franz Lehar. 9 March 2012, Friday

Accompanied by Ekaterina Ganelina (piano), Hibla will present a program of songs by Russian composers and arias from operas by European composers. Concerts of the project Nights of Music in the Museum are more like musical parlours of the 19th century, and provide a great opportunity not only to attend fine musical events, but to also explore a rich exhibition of the House of Icon and to enjoy time in a good company and friendly environment. Such an intimate chamber recital is a rare and a great occasion for both listeners and performers.

1 March 2012, Thursday
On March 8th, International Women’s Day, Hibla will be giving her long-awaited solo recital in Kazan. Many years since her last visit to Kazan, Hibla will appear on the stage of Salikh Saidashev Concert Hall accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan directed by Maestro Alexander Sladkovsky, one of the finest Russian conductors. Russian state TV channel “Kultura” will be making a video-recording of this concert and will later broadcast it for all those admirers of Hibla’s talent who won’t be able to attend it.

18 January 2012, Wednesday
On January 21st, Hibla will make a debut as Donna Anna in London, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In a revival of Francesca Zambello’s production of one of Mozart’s greatest operas Don Giovanni (revival director Duncan McFarlane), which critics referred to as “women-friendly” production, Donna Anna is a character that reflects the growth of her personality: as the story develops, from an ordinary woman she turns into a superhero due to the gradual understanding and acceptance of her feminine nature. From a 20th century Catwoman she is separated only by the historical context, but Francesca Zambello conceived Donna Anna this way. Don Giovanni was only a key that opened the door to her to an independent and, therefore, an uncertain future, which entirely depends on her own.
Hibla is delighted that once again her partner will be Gerald Finley (Don Giovanni), with whom she had made her debut at the Royal Opera House in 2008, in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. The part of Don Ottavio will be performed by Matthew Polenzani, Leporello — Lorenzo Regazzo, Donna Elvira — Katarina Karnéus, Zerlina — Irini Kyriakidou, Masetto — Adam Plachetka, and the part of Commendatore will be sung by Marco Spotti. The Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House will be conducted by Constantinos Carydis.

11 January 2012, Wednesday
Hibla Gerzmava was awarded a title of People’s Artist of Russia (Decree by the President of the Russian Federation, on 09.01.2012, No. 33). This is the highest and most prestigious official title that artists receive in Russia, it is given in honour of a great achievement and contribution to the world of arts.

6 January 2012, Friday
Today is Hibla Gerzmava’s Birthday.

12 December 2011, Monday
The most ambitious project of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus is the 2nd Minsk International Christmas Opera Forum that will be held from 15 to 20 December 2011. The founders of the Opera Forum are the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk City Executive Committee and the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus. During the forum, the audience will see not only new productions of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus with the best local artists and guest stars, but also specifically brought to this Forum Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La traviata directed by Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre. This performance, conducted by Felix Korobov, opens the Opera Forum on December 15th. The main part in the acclaimed production by Alexander Titel will be performed by Hibla Gerzmava, who will arrive in Minsk soon after she had a great success in a few revival performances of Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Violetta Valery performed by Hibla is always a heat, a strain and a fracture, a mixture of passion and sensuality with loneliness and despair. This presents a beauty and a profound tragedy, born of the most amazing and irresistible force in the world under the name of Love...

24 November 2011, Thursday
On November 25th, Hibla for the first time will be singing in Puccini’s La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera, stage production by Franco Zeffirelli. A series of four performances conducted by Louis Langrée, starring Hibla, will last until December 8th. The part of Mimì is one of the brightest in Hibla’s repertoire. She performed this role dozens of times: ranging from her “native” Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre to the opera houses of Munich (Bayerische Staatsoper), Rome (Teatro dell’Opera di Roma) and St Petersburg (Mariinsky Theatre). Her Mimì is gentle, yet extremely emotional, sensitive to pain and touching to tears. A famous Russian actress Faina Ranevskaya said that one should not play on stage, but should live on stage: Mimì performed by Hibla Gerzmava is a true example to the words of the great actress.

22 November 2011, Tuesday
On November 17th, nominees of the Russian National Theatrical Golden Mask Festival and Award have been announced. Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre that in May 2011 presented the premiere of Jacques Offenbach’s opera Les contes d’Hoffmann will compete for Russia’s highest theatrical prize in several nominations: Hibla Gerzmava, who received the Award in 2010 for the title role in Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor, this year nominated for the performance of the four parts in one opera (Stella, Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia), Dmitry Stepanovich (Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto, Miracle) nominated for the Best Male Singer, Alexander Titel — for the Best Opera Director, Yevgeny Brazhnik — in the Conductor nomination, Valery Leventhal — for the work of Designer in Opera Production, Damir Ismagilov — for the work of Lighting Designer in Opera Production. Together with the Les contes d’Hoffmann production itself that will fight for the title of the Best Opera Production, this year the Theatre is represented in seven categories. In Les contes d’Hoffmann, by going on a challenging experiment, which for 130 years since the creation of the opera was ventured only by a few, Hibla, realising the idea of the composer, has done nearly impossible, playing and singing parts of three characters that are completely different in their nature and dramatic vocal technique, representing the facets of a perfect Woman, a Woman-Dream, a Woman who sings...

23 October 2011, Sunday
Tonight, on October 23rd, Hibla, accompanied by Ekaterina Ganelina, will perform at the concert-presentation of ALMA MATER, the newly formed community of graduates of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory. Hibla joined the Board of Trustees of ALMA MATER and will be directly involved in the development of this community in the future. Hibla will sing an aria of Vitellia from the 2nd Act of Mozart’s opera La Clemenza di Tito. The concert takes place at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on Bolshaya Nikitskaya street, 13, at 7:00PM.

16 October 2011, Sunday
Hibla Gerzmava continues her short concert tour beyond the Ural Mountains and goes to beautiful Siberian city of Tomsk to perform there for the first time. This long-anticipated recital is supported by the MDM Bank within the framework of its National charitable project. Tomsk Academic Symphony Orchestra will accompany world-renowned diva on the stage of the Tomsk Philharmonics Concert Hall on October 20th.

11 October 2011, Tuesday
Almost right after coming back from the Opéra National de Paris after her debut in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito as Vitellia, Hibla Gerzmava comes back to Chelyabinsk after 2 years break. On October 17th she will perform a programme consisting of popular arias from the operas of various European composers along with the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra “Classics” under the baton of Adik Abdurakhmanov. The recital is hosted by the Chelyabinsk Concert Union and will be held at the State Academic Glinka Opera and Ballet Theatre.

7 September 2011, Wednesday
September 10th will mark Hibla’s debut on the stage of one of the most famous opera houses — the Grand Opéra, which is often referred to as the most beautiful theater in the world. Work on the creation of this architectural masterpiece by Charles Garnier project was completed in December 1874 and in January 1875 the Paris Opera (the theater was called this way for more than a hundred years — until the opening of the Opéra Bastille in 1989) opened its doors to the public.
La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart occupied the whole month of theater schedule and the last of nine performances will be given on October 8th. Strictly ascetic, at first glance, sets and costumes by John Macfarlane, along with the director Willy Decker in fact, bring an array of layered metaphors, allusions and connotations. A remarkable international singers under the direction of the Hungarian conductor Adam Fischer, one of the best conductors of baroque music, make an impressively defined ensemble of characters under the dome, painted by Marc Chagall: Hibla Gerzmava (Vitellia), Stéphanie D’Oustrac (Sesto), Amel Brahim-Djelloul (Servilia), Allyson McHardy (Annio), Balint Szabo (Publio) and Klaus Florian Vogt (Tito Vespasiano).

24 August 2011, Wednesday
A new page in Hibla’s career opens with the role of Vitellia that comes into her repertoire. La Clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, an opera specially commissioned for the coronation of the Austrian Emperor Leopold II, received its premiere on September 6th, 1791 in Prague. Paris premiere at the Palais Garnier featuring Hibla will be held only 220 years and 4 days later, but promises to be a significant event in the opera world — tickets for all nine performances are already sold out. Another interesting numerological thing: rehearsing a production with a completely new roster of singers (premiere of this production by Willy Decker was held in 1997), each of whom sings their own part for the first time, takes 18 days, which coincides with the creation of the opera itself by the composer: Mozart wrote his opera in just 18 days. In addition, rehearsal sessions commenced on August 18th, at the studio of Opéra Bastille, where rehearsals will continue until early September.

19 July 2011, Tuesday
In just a few days the city of Pitsunda, Republic of Abkhazia, will be hosting participants of the 10th Music Festival “Hibla Gerzmava invites...” — pianist Denis Matsuev, opera soloists Eugene Polikanin, Sergei Balashov and the Orchestra of the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre under Felix Korobov. This musical feast is a gift from the bottom of Hibla’s heart to all Abkhazian people. And these are not just words. Hibla does not come to Sukhum and Pitsunda as an opera diva of global scale, instead she comes as a grateful daughter, paying a tribute to her native land, in a way only she could do, as no one else could do. Hibla is personally involved in the preparation of the Festival from its beginning to the end, personally overseeing each and every detail. Her ideas were realised thanks to the continued support of her friends and collaborators: Andrei Dudko and “New Generation” Charity Foundation, Enver Kuzmin and “Restavratsia N” Ltd., the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Abkhazia and the Ministry of Culture of Russia. As the Festival is held under the patronage of the Government of the Republic of Abkhazia, means it has a state-wide status and its paramount importance in terms of cultural events throughout the country.

13 July 2011, Wednesday
July 15th sees the start of one of the world’s most prestigious festivals of classical music — London’s BBC Proms. Hibla Gerzmava has an honour to perform at the opening concert with one of the most famous conductors — Jiří Bělohlávek, who is the Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra for the last five years. Hibla will be singing the soprano part in the “Glagolitic Mass” — an oratorio by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. This work is one of the greatest spiritual works of this genre written in the 20th century. Text of the “Mass” is written in the Glagolitic alphabet, which explains its name and stands out among other Catholic “masses”, which had always been written in Latin. “Glagolitic Mass” is a hymn to the ancient Slavic alphabet, as well as to Moravia — composer’s motherland, which he described: “The walls of my church are the mountains, its dome is the sky, its candles are tall firs, its carpet is the green grass, and incense smoke is Luhačovice forests fragrance.”

6 June 2011, Monday
While these days Italy celebrates the Republic Day, Hibla began her rehearsals of “La Boheme” at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma with one of the most exciting conductors of our time James Conlon — Knight of the Légion d’Honneur, Commander de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. Prior to the Italian Republic was proclaimed, the theater held the title “Teatro Costanzi” (Domenico Costanzi Theatre), which was later renamed to “The Royal Opera House”. On June 16, Hibla will perform on stage of this theater for the first time in the company of the stars of world opera Ramón Vargas (Rodolfo), and Patricia Ciofi (Musetta) — just three weeks after her great triumph in this Puccini’s masterpiece in Bavarian Land.

29 May 2011, Sunday
This morning in Moscow, Sergei Bagapsh, the President of Abkhazia, died. 10 days ago he experienced a surgery on his right lung. According to doctors, the operation was successful, but three days ago, the lungs opted out, which resulted in complications that led to the critical state of his health and, consequently, to death. Hibla Gerzmava together with her family, friends and colleagues would like to express their deepest condolences to the family of Sergei Vasilievich and mourns with the people of Abkhazia on the untimely deceased President of the independent Republic, good Friend, a great Personality... Strong and patient people of Abkhazia should survive through this unexpected tragedy with all their fortitude and we ought to look into the future with hope and faith. All Hibla’s thoughts and emotions are with you, dear friends! She breathes and cries with you...

14 May 2011, Saturday
New photos from the premiere of Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre have been uploaded to the stage photos album. The premiere of new production by Alexander Titel has been received on May 5. The acclaimed Italian maestro Marco Armiliato will be conducting this remarkable ensemble of soloists, Orchestra and Chorus of the National Theatre.

1 May 2011, Sunday
The most anticipated event of the theatrical season
The only opera by Offenbach, who was often referred as “The King of Operetta”, received its premiere in early 1881 in Paris at Le Théâtre national de l’Opéra-Comique. The composer did not live up to the premiere, as he passed away in October 1880. 130 years later, the October of 2010, was marked with a tragic news about the death of one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century — Dame Joan Alston Sutherland, OM, AC, DBE, who was one of the few dared to perform all three of the most difficult vocal parts — Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta, and played the role of Stella — the image of all three heroines of the opera.
Hibla made a successful debut in Les Contes d’Hoffmann on stage of the Metropolitan Opera last autumn, performing the parts of Antonia and Stella. Composer’s bequest was that all major female parts must be performed by one singer, and Hibla Gerzmava is now completely prepared to take part in this amazing experiment of remarkable creativeness in order to discover and demonstrate various facets of her unique talent that combines three entities — the instrumentalist, the singer and the actress.

27 April 2011, Wednesday
The annual Music Festival “Hibla Gerzmava invites...”, which is held for the tenth time this year, will see a well-known pianist Denis Matsuev, Symphony Orchestra and soloists of the Moscow Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre Eugene Polikanin (baritone), Sergei Balashov (tenor) and, of course, Hibla Gerzmava herself. Felix Korobov will be conducting the concerts that will be held at the Abkhazian State Philharmonic Hall on 22 and 23 July. Grand opening of the festival with the participation of the State Chamber Orchestra “Moscow Virtuosi” under the baton of Maestro Spivakov, along with Alisa Gitsba and Hibla Gerzmava was held on 4 April in Sukhum. All funds collected from ticket sales, Hibla transferred to charitable projects: some of the money was sent to Tquarchal to build the monument to the victims, large share was transferred to an orphanage and boarding of Kaldakhuara and a music school of Sukhum, where Hibla had once studied.

15 April 2011, Friday
An important event happened in the musical world last night: the BBC Proms 2011 season program has been officially released. This year the 116th issue of this annual Festival will run from 15 July till 10 September. The concept of promenade concerts introduced by Sir Henry Wood is an integral part of the British society and the whole idea of the democratic British musical culture ought to be understood through the prism of “promming”. In 1927, the BBC took over the running of the concerts and the Festival evolved to the one of the most prestigious events world-wide. All of the Festival concerts are broadcast live and for future relay on the BBC radio. Hibla Gerzmava will take part in the opening concert of the Festival on 15 July (Prom No. 1) and will perform a solo part in the Janáček’s “Glagolitic Mass” along with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek — a musician that greatly changed people’s perception of the music of his native Czech Republic.

12 February 2011, Saturday
A new page in the repertoire of Hibla Gerzmava opens with the appearance of the role of Liù (performances on 18 & 20 February). Atonement love, sacrifice, tenderness and unbending will: this way Puccini created Liù, so opera-goers will see her such way performed by Hibla. Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Turandot” directed by Charles Roubaud goes on tour in Japan, where the constellation of the Mariinsky Theatre opera singers will join our Supernova. By an amazing coincidence, all the names of performers major parties begin at the same letter: Hibla Gerzmava, Maria Guleghina and Vladimir Galuzin. On top of that, Valery Gergiev will conduct these performances, turning the cast into a real G-force! Will this mean that after the performances in Tokyo’s NHK Hall it will be referred to as a «Genuine-Genial-Great-Gorgeous-Gracious», we will know very soon!
